Managing Risk Like an Enterprise

Ice is the third-largest telco in Norway. Their goal is to be the second largest by 2025. Out of Norway’s population of five million, nearly one million of them are Ice subscribers. After being acquired by Lyse, a Norwegian energy and telecom group, this allowed them to enter other markets and offer the best 5G service nationwide. Ice needed to be faster, leaner, and free to innovate over its competitors. They aimed to build the slickest IT infrastructure by adopting a DevOps mindset, allowing them to scale rapidly. With their limited resources and the need for consistency and automation, Ice looked to VMware.

Ice was looking for a solution that would give them control over their systems and was manageable for a two-person team. “We’re a multi-cloud company. We use Microsoft Azure and AWS for different use cases. We need a common platform that enables interoperability across these different clouds and on-premises,” says William Brown, cloud infrastructure architect, Ice. The solution was VMware Cloud Foundation on VxRail—the VMware and Dell jointly engineered turnkey hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) appliance—which Ice originally deployed to migrate their VMs from their legacy environment. After adopting a multi-cloud strategy, they soon realized that there were more use cases in which VMware Cloud Foundation could help solve for them. “With VMware Cloud Foundation, we have an all-in-one software-defined data center with computing, networking, security and the storage part all built-in with lifecycle management,” explains Brown.

With multiple cloud environments, Ice came across additionally challenges for the 250 person company. Challenges with their networking environments and IT service delivery, for example, were all faced head-on with VMware solutions. Now with a scalable platform, Ice has the capability to support new services. “We’re running a platform with the agility of a start-up while managing risk like an enterprise. We’re able to innovate a lot faster than our competitors. We’re ready for growth,” says Brown.
